Ginger gets Netflix... for now

I’ve always strayed away from adding things into Ginger Meggs that might be so ephemeral that they won’t date well. MySpace is a perfect example- When I took over the strip in 2007 it was all the rage, but then this thing called Facebook came along, and, well… I was glad I hadn’t made Ginger a MySpace celebrity.

But, it seems Netflix has made an indelible dent on the entertainment industry and the way people all over the world consume content. Since it came to Australia, the rate it has been taken up is astounding. I had been using it in the US for some time before Australia got its own version, and did wonder if they’d eschew it for something more domestically made, but alas, the cheap, imported US product has one out yet again.

I wanted to make it as clear as possible that Ginger got a free trial, so there’s still a chance when his parents realise it has to be paid for after the trial ends they might yank the plug. We shall see…

The counterpoint to avoiding the ephemeral is that the strip should capture the zeitgeist of whatever time in which it is published. I would agree with that, and looking at old strips puts paid to that notion, however I think it’s important to be selective about the things you decide to include.
